BUILDING “THICK” DEMOCRACY IN EDUCATION IN A TIME OF NEOLIBERALISM
Abstract: This is a very difficult time in education. Neoliberal and
neoconservative policies and reforms have been coupled with an emphasis
on audit cultures, thereby making it even harder to build and defend more
democratic, respectful, and responsive programmes in schools. I shall
discuss some of the effects of these policies and reforms and will then
describe real alternatives that have been built in a number of places
internationally that document the possibilities of creating “thick”
democracies in education rather than the “thin” visions advanced under
the neoliberal agenda.
